I Am.

I am, the soft whisper, in the quiet forest.

Spring Valley

I am, in the rumble of the thunder.

I am, the light and strength of the lighting.

I am, the clouds, that fill the deep blue sky.

I am, the hight, of the tallest mountain.

I am, the deep, of the deepest valley.

I am, the smallest, of the flowers that fill the country side.

I am, the roaring, of the oceans.

I am, the sweet smell, of the summer rain.

I am, in the shadow and He who brings to it light.

I am, the colors, of the fall.

I am, the green, of the spring.

I am, the snow, that covers the earth in winter.

I am, the one, who makes, the birds to sing and the fishes to swim.

I am, the one, who walks with the animals on their journey.

I am, the smile of a new born baby.

I am, in the weeping of a motherless child.

I am, from everlasting to everlasting.

I was there, when there was no sun.

I was there, when there was no space.

I saw, the first man to breath life.

I was, there when man built the first house.

I was, there when the corn first appeared, and the been to sprout.

I was, there when man first saw woman.

I am, my brothers keeper.

I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.

I am, the pleasure, and the pain, of many.

I am, the root, and the offspring, of David.

I am, the bright, and morning star.

I am, Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.

I am, he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.

I am, Holy.

I am, Your Mother, Father, Sister and Brother.

I am, the tabernacle, and the Church.

I am, not weak, but I offend many.

I am, the way, the Truth and the life.

I am, in the Son and the Son in Me.

I am, who I Am.

I am, The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

I am, the God of the living, and not of the Dead.

I am, Gentile, but will not be mocked.

I am, the one who gives kings their power, and He who, takes it away.

I am, the one who made the children of Israel to tremble.

I am the one that destroys the unrighteous, as they stand.

I am, the one who created all things, visible and invisible.

I am, the one who created governments, and laws.

I am a rewarder of those that seek me, and the judgment and fear of those that reject My Son.

I am, the one who will have mercy, and not sacrifice.

I am, not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

I am, not come to send peace on earth, but a sword.

I am, come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

I am, meek and lowly in heart.

I am, The Lord.

I am the Almighty God.

But whom say ye that, I am?

In the elementary school I attended in Tempe, Arizona, I was taught about the Five C's of Arizona. They are: Copper, Cattle, Cotton, Citrus and Climate. For this article, I will be focusing on the fourth C of this list. Arizona's climate is perfect for growing citrus trees, but not all Arizonans know how to care for them. The biggest mistakes commonly made involve how and when to prune citrus trees. Many people are concerned about WHEN they should prune their citrus trees, though that is not the most important question involved. For some, the answer could be: NEVER! Perhaps a more appropriate question is: why should I not trim my citrus trees?

Why NOT to Trim Citrus Trees

Spring Valley

When one Valley resident asked The Arizona Republic's garden expert when she should trim her citrus trees, this was part of the reply: "Homeowners like to trim their citrus trees for looks. Did you know that citrus trees are actually bushes and their branches naturally grow low to the ground? That's Mother Nature's way of protecting the fruit and bark ..." Those who have driven by the old groves that still exist in parts of East Mesa may understand this idea of citrus trees as overgrown shrubs. The popular misconception that citrus trees should be trimmed the same way as any other type of tree means a shortened life span for many citrus trees in the Phoenix area. This is why I would like readers to ask themselves why they want to trim them before they wonder about when to prune their citrus trees. Whether the aim is to optimize citrus fruit production or simply to have your citrus trees contribute aesthetically to your yard, you should keep their overall health in mind when trimming.

How to Trim Citrus Trees

Even if done during the most optimal time of year, any pruning done should be very minimal. As Dave Owens, also known as 'The Garden Guy' states, "Citrus trees like to be left unpruned. The more foliage and dead wood on the tree, the more sun protection the tree trunk will get." John Begeman, another gardening expert of Arizona, points out that "more leaves equates to more and better fruit," and also recommends pruning "only if you must and only using the proper techniques." As outlined in a 1987 article by Lowell F. True, there is some trimming that may be necessary. Although it is best to leave a 'skirt' (branches that nearly touch the ground), it is all right to trim this away just enough to make watering and fertilizing easier. Errant branches may also be trimmed, especially if they rub against other branches. As for the outer foliage, the tree's silhouette, this may be 'shaped' for aesthetic purposes, as long as great care is taken to avoid exposing too much bark of the tree to sunlight. There is only one type of pruning that can and should be done regardless of the time of year, especially if you maintain citrus trees for their fruit: the removal of sucker growth. These suckers are also called 'water sprouts,' and will sprout from the trunk or even the roots of the tree. A layman may feel this necessary out of intuition or a desire to make the tree look nice, but in fact there is a good reason behind it. True says: "Be sure to eliminate all suckers arising from below the bud union [which is the site of grafting]. They are from the rootstock variety and will not bear edible fruit. When left to develop, they will take over the top portion causing your named citrus variety to be reverted back to an undesired variety." One important 'when' of pruning involves limbs that have been killed by frost, do not remove this deadwood until after spring growth has started, so you can be sure of the extent of the damage.

When to Trim Citrus Trees in Arizona

The best time of year to trim citrus trees is in the spring. If you trim them between about mid March to early May, the trees are less likely to be harmed by extremes in temperature. Citrus fruit ripens in the late fall, from about November to February for most varieties. Minimal pruning during this harvest time is also acceptable. During the winter there is danger of frost, and during the summer there is the opposite problem. Citrus trees are highly sensitive to sun damage, especially during the hottest months of the year and during the hottest parts of the day. If the tree is not shaded during the afternoon, any bare trunk or branches need to be wrapped or painted (whitewashed) for sun protection. The tree is most vulnerable where it receives direct sunshine in the afternoon: the Southwestern exposure. This is why it is so important not to overprune citrus trees: branches subjected to direct sun will burn, and full exposure to the trunk can kill the tree altogether.

In conclusion, I would like to re-emphasize that knowing when to trim citrus trees is not nearly as important as understanding how to trim citrus trees. The number one rule in knowing when to trim citrus trees is the sun. The number one rule in knowing how to trim citrus trees is minimalism. Remember, they are actually just large bushes.

So there's tons of cheerleaders out there dancing on the field and we never bother to get to know them. All we do is just stare at them dancing, think 'oh they dance good, look good, typical cheerleaders' and move on without a thought as to what really goes behind the scenes of an NFL cheerleader. Well, I am here to tell you that there is a lot more than meets the eye. All those movies you saw like "Bring it On" and those television shows that showed a bunch of drama queens as cheerleaders have got it all wrong.

Myth #1 - It's easy being an NFL cheerleader.

Spring Valley

Um. No. There is no way that it is easy being a cheerleader. So much goes into the auditions, that you're lucky to even make it into the squad in the first place. Hundreds of girls try out and you have to be in the top 3% to make it in the squad, no kidding. They all dance good, look good, are energetic, enthusiastic, and have a great personality on top of all that. After they get into the squad, it takes hours of practice almost every day in order to get the NFL dancing routines down. It gets worse when they have to dance in the freezing cold, especially in the northern States (which some NFL teams use as an excuse for not having a cheerleading team and yes not every NFL team has a cheerleading squad). Outside of the dances, they also have to show up for charity events, make guest appearances, do photo shoots, and sometimes even travel overseas to entertain our very own US military troops to keep their morale high. Whoever said being a cheerleader was easy obviously hasn't seen one at work.

Myth: NFL Cheerleaders get to meet football stars and date them

Absolutely not. NFL Cheerleaders are not allowed to "fraternize" with the players. That means no flirting, no personal relationships, no personal "friendships", or anything that might imply a relationship outside of the professional realm of the NFL. Yes, they can interact a little bit at charity events and guest appearances but typically, you'd have better luck getting to know the football stars as a janitor cleaning their locker rooms or being some sort of groupie. Cheerleaders going out with the likes of Tom Brady and Randy Moss? Forget about it.

Myth: NFL Cheerleaders rack in the fame and fortune

How much do cheerleaders get paid in the NFL? The answer to that question is to a game. Heck, there are times when they don't get paid at all. They have to show up at guest appearance, photo shoots, overseas performances for US troops and all of that is most likely unpaid. Don't feel too bad for them. Some of them get out of cheerleading and find that a bunch of opportunities await them because of their NFL cheerleading elite status. Teri Hatcher from Desperate Housewives was a San Francisco 49ers Gold Rush Cheerleader once and look where she is now. Making 5,000 an episode and multiply that by 10+ episodes per season. Now who wants to be an NFL cheerleader?

Myth: NFL Cheerleaders are stupid and act like valley girls

Yes, NFL cheerleaders are hot but who said you can't combine beauty with brains? People tend to associate cheerleaders with light-headed valley girls who enjoy going shopping and being the drama queens. Well these cheerleaders aren't in high school anymore for one thing. Another thing is that these cheerleaders need to be mature and intelligent so that they can answer to the media. After all, they are an important aspect of the team's public image.

NFL cheerleaders deserve a better reputation. Sure there are a few black sheep out there but in general, the NFL cheerleaders are good girls who do their best to perform for us. The least we could do is show our appreciation. Don't forget they also contribute to the community in various charity events so they do help out on a local and national level. Let's show our support for them and give them the credit they deserve.

Myths of NFL Cheerleaders Unraveled

David Court has written various articles on the issue of NFL cheerleaders. To find out more, visit his website NFL Cheerleaders Blog
